Rainiers Sweep Sox

Tacoma completed a three-game sweep of the Colorado Springs Sky Sox with a 5-2 victory in front of a packed house of 6,697 on Wednesday night.

James Paxton earned the win, surviving five innings allowing two runs. Lucas Luetge was the hero out of the bullpen, delivering three scoreless innings.

Tacoma took the lead on a Stefen Romero two-run single in the fifth that made it 4-2. Romero had two hits, and Nate Tenbrink was 3-for-4. Those two guys – along with Rich Poythress – heated up during the Colorado Springs series.

Tacoma still leads the division by four games, but now Salt Lake is all alone in second place. The Sky Sox are now five back.

Tacoma visits Salt Lake tonight, with a four-game series starting up. This is a big one – especially for the Bees. If Tacoma can just get a split in Salt Lake City, the lead is still a solid four games. But the Bees will be looking to win the series and cut into the Tacoma lead.

We do have injury updates – check the links below, Mariners general manager Jack Z updated the media covering the series in Texas on the status of Danny Hultzen and Jesus Montero.

Tonight’s game is at 6:05 (Pacific), and the broadcast airs on South Sound Sports 850 AM and streams online right here. Use the TuneIn app for your iPad or smart phone. Tacoma starts RHP Brian Sweeney (7-3, 3.93) against Salt Lake RHP Jarrett Grube (3-2, 3.40). Grube pitched for Tacoma during parts of each of the last two seasons.

  • We start with the Rainiers game story from The News Tribune, in which Nate Tenbrink talks about breaking out of a slump.
  • The Mariners beat the Rangers again – this time on Kyle Seager‘s tenth-inning homer.
  • Ryan Divish has updates on injured Rainiers Danny Hultzen and Jesus Montero. Sounds like we could see Montero in a week or so.
  • Salt Lake topped Reno last night, 6-4, on a two-run homer by Rodrigo Lopez in the ninth inning. The Bees finished an 11-game road trip with a 6-5 record, and they are 23-10 over their last 33 games.

That’s it for today – travel day. We actually get a somewhat late flight, so the team should be well-rested for tonight’s game. Have a great 4th of July!
