It was a very quiet weekend on the Rainiers/Mariners front, but there are a few stories of interest, so let’s just get to them:
- Pitcher DJ Mitchell cleared waivers and was assigned to the Tacoma roster. Mitchell was removed from the Mariners 40-man roster when they signed Raul Ibanez. Mitchell will battle for a spot in the Tacoma starting rotation, a competition that figures to involve Danny Hultzen, Andrew Carraway, James Paxton, Hector Noesi, Brandon Maurer, Anthony Vasquez, possibly Taijuan Walker… holy smokes, that’s a lot of Triple-A level starting pitchers.
- Prospect analyst John Sickels posted his Top 20 Mariners Prospects list. It’s an interesting read.
- Some PCL coaching staffs were announced: Fresno is bringing back manager Bob Marinaro and our old buddy Pat Rice is back as pitching coach. The Co-Dean of PCL managers is back, as well: Bobby Jones returns as manager in Round Rock, his 12th season as a Triple-A manager. I would call him the Dean of PCL managers except Mike Jirschele might get angry out there in Omaha.
- They are gearing up for the final season in Tucson. This story includes a note on the tough spot that Tucson radio guy Tim Hagerty is in. I feel for you, Tim.
